An oldie but classic is Ludwell Johnson's The Red River Campaign. The modern expert is Gary Joiner with his books Through the Howling Wilderness and Little to Eat and Thin Mud to Drink. The first is an in depth study of the campaign, the second is a collection of letters, diaries and memoirs that deal with the campaign.
