To put things into a little more perspection.On August 26th,General Walker's Texas Division was camped within a few miles of Waterloo on the west bank of the Mississippi. Waterloo is or was about midway between Bayou Sarah and Port Hudson which are on the east bank. The Division had been ordered by General Smith,under the direct supervision of General Taylor to cross over the river here.
