I found this blurb about Louisiana troops that were captured at Vicksburg in the Weekly Gazette and Free Press (Janesville, Wisconsin), July 17, 1863: “Several hundred men from the Louisiana brigade crossed the river on stolen yawls and skiffs as soon as they were paroled, declaring they would not fire another gun for the rebels, but they would go home and stay there.”
