Thanks for all of your information regarding the battle and the casualties. My ggrandfather, Rufus Hale, fought for the Confederacy for Lane's Texas Cavalry, Company E. He was shot in the head at Yellow Bayou (a "through and through" wound) and survived, against all odds. I found him in the 1870 census living in Frick's Gap, GA (he later moved near Waldron, AR). He died in Oklahoma in 1903, partially blind and deaf and having been denied a disability pension by both Texas and Arkansas after the war. I have a copy of an affidavit signed by some of his fellow veterans, if anyone is interested.
