Furloughs

Hello, My subject John Rush enlisted Aug. 22, 1862 in Logan, Ohio; mustered in Camp Circleville, Ohio Sept. 9, 1862. I the papers we got states he was home on furlough, cannot figure out when that was, but a paper from The War Dept. states on first roll, ending Oct. 31, 1862, absent cause not stated. Nov. and Dec. '62 present. He died Jan. 22, 1863. What would be the reasons they would give a soldier a furlough? Did they have any training with guns etc.. Oh then the paper states that Return for Nov. 1862 reports nine men absent on furlough, names not given. We know he was home in either Vinton or Ross Co., Ohio, thats a long travel time for back then. Did they travel on trains or boats to get back and forth from furloughs? Hope this is not to confusing. You guys do an outstanding job answering questions, I really appreciate it. Carol Martin
