Capt. Walt Wilson Lecture

James D. Bulloch: Secret Agent Mastermind of the Confederate Navy

Captain Walt Wilson will present highlights from his recent book “James D. Bulloch; Secret Agent and Mastermind of the Confederate Navy” on Saturday, August 3rd 2013 at 1:30 pm at the Young-Sanders Center for the Study of the War Between the States.

The presentation will cover the exploits of Confederate secret agent who was feared and respected as the Confederacy’s most dangerous man in Europe. Bulloch married a Southern belle from Plaquemine, Louisiana and became a close associate of Louisiana Senator Judah P. Benjamin. He escaped from New Orleans to lead the South’s covert shipbuilding and logistics program overseas. From his base in Liverpool, Bulloch acquired a staggering 49 warships and blockade runners; built 4 ocean-going ironclads; financed covert operations; and masterminded the destruction of 130 Union ships. Ironically, this man who worked to destroy the Union and kidnap its president also was Theodore Roosevelt’s favorite uncle and mentor.

Walt is a retired Navy Captain and intelligence officer who served 10 years on aircraft carriers, in the Pentagon, and overseas in Korea, Japan, and the United Kingdom. In his civilian career, he was Vice President of a Defense consulting firm and Assistant Director for the Texas Dept. of Information Resources in Austin. He now resides in San Antonio, Texas where he is an Admiral in the Texas Navy and past President of the San Antonio Navy League. Walt holds Masters degrees from Marymount University and Pepperdine University, and is a graduate of the Air War College and the University of Texas at Austin. He is married to his high school sweetheart, the former Sharon McKusker of Bridge City, TX.

The lecture will begin at 1:30 pm at the Young-Sanders Center for the Study of the War Between the States located at 703 Teche Drive, Franklin, Louisiana.
The Lecture is open to the public with no admission fee. Refreshments will be served. For further information call us at (337) 413-1861.
