Re: 58th Illinois casualty at Yellow Bayou

Hi,

When looking for more information about my ancestor, who also died of an injury sustained near Yellow Bayou, and who was also sent to a hospital boat, I came across your question. In the case of my ancestor, while he was determined to have died of an injury sustained near Yellow Bayou, that injury was pulmonary tuberculosis, and his death came six years later back in his home town of Alden, Illinois (see a fuller story in my blog post: http://wp.me/p33UiZ-e2)

So the discrepancy found between death place and place of injury (and possibly between date of injury and date of death) may not be a transcription error after all.

What helped me put it all together was his widow's and childrens' pension application from 1870-1871, which I received through a research request made to the National Archives. In my case, I received 55 scanned pages on a CD for $75, and it took only a couple of weeks from when I placed the order through the NARA website.

Good luck!

Michael
