On May 2, Hays placed the 6th and 9th La. near Barksdale's Brigade on Marye's Heights while the rest of the brigade remained at Hamilton's Crossing. The 6th and 9th left their position at 3:00 a.m. on May 3 to rejoin the brigade. Just as they arrived, however, Hays was ordered to move to the left and the 6th and 9th had to turn around and retrace their steps. The 6th La. was dropped off to support Barksdale and was placed to the right of the Mississippians in front of the Washington Artillery while the rest of the brigade continued farther to the left.
