Re: Union cavalry red river campaign of 1864

The three books you mention are all good. Johnson's is usually considered the most complete and is always referenced in any newer book on the subject. Richard Taylor's "Destruction and Reconstruction" is essential. John Winters "The Civil War in Louisiana" is another important source.

As far as specific to Union Cavalry of course the Official Records Volume 34 in 4 parts I guess would be the primary source. There are some primary source unit histories and memoirs of people involved that used to be on Google Books but I think they have removed a lot of them. All my copies are filed away but I'll see if I can scan thru them.

Gary Joiner is an authority on the Red River Campaign and can probably give you much more information. Scott Dearman, ranger at Mansfield State Historic Site, is a wealth of knowledge on the campaign.
