While at Baton Rouge, the 4th camped on the State House grounds and on 1 September, by order of the War Department, the 4th was re-designated the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment. During this time, Lieutenant Earl ventured out, often on his own to familiarize himself with the region. On 28 September, he went out with two local blacks, who were very familiar with the area and returned the next day with Captain Pinney and thirteen other Confederates.
