After marching through the hills of Arkansas and Missouri, member of the 3rd Louisiana, W. F. Tunnard, recalled that large numbers were shoeless and many uniforms hung in shreds. He does mention some men in fine uniforms - mainly artillery companies. But it wasn't until late September and early October that supplies from Louisiana addressed some of their wants. Another member, William Watson, tells the same story. The tinsel uniforms of early 1861 had gone. Regarding these, some companies wore gray, others green and a few blue.
