Steve,

Berwick City(now Berwick) was burned to the ground by union soldiers in 1863. The reason given by the Union Army was due to continuous daily fire by Confederate soldiers from roof tops and houses in Berwick City directed toward the Union encampment in Brashear City. I can't recall the exact citation for this information, but I do remember seeing several accounts of this destruction mention in several regimental histories.
