There is an excellent book that I read years ago that describes the last few days of skirmishes leading up to Appamatox. If I remember correctly, the title was "8 Days to Appamatox". It's a compilation of diaries of veterans. It was only after reading the diaries did I come to understand how the southerners could continue to fight. It was like death had ceased to exist for them and their devotion to Lee was the glue that held them together.

I agree, it's a profound experience to walk the grounds of Appamatox.
