Danny, if you are familiar with Dick Taylor's attempts, you will remember that he faced several difficulties. The major one was trying to avoid interference from Union gunboats. An attempt was made to seize the "Rattler" and use it to capture others, but it ended in dismal failure. His other major problem was that the Texas troops (not all but many) virtually mutinied when they learned they were to cross the river. By March 1865, Kirby Smith would probably have faced equally, if not more, reticence on the part of any troops he chose to make the crossing. I'm not convinced that it would have been easier for him then than it had been for Taylor 6-7 months earlier. I certainly do not fault Lee for doing what he could to continue the fight. This just seems an unrealistic proposal.
