Re: Samuel E. Lewellen
In Response To: Samuel E. Lewellen ()

Dear Georga,

I cannot find a Samuel or S. Lewellen by any number of different spellings in the Broadfoot Publishing Roster of Confederate Soldiers or at the National Archives website. From the Broadfoot Roster, here are all the "Lewellens" listed.

Last Name First Name State Unit Sub Unit Rank
Luallein, A.S. MO Cav. Fristoe's Regt. Co.C
Luallen, George W. MO Cav. Wood's Regt. Co.A
Luallen, Henry P. MO Cav. Wood's Regt. Co.A
Luallen, John MO Cav. Wood's Regt. Co.A
Lewallen, F. MO Cav. Slayback's Regt. Co.B
Lewallen, J.S. MO 6th Cav. Co.D Sgt.
Lewallen, Jacob MO 1st N.E. Cav. Co.O
Lewallen, Jasper MO 9th (Elliott's) Cav. Co.C
Lewallen, Thomas MO 1st N.E. Cav. Co.O
Lewallen, W.J. MO 6th Cav. Co.D
Lewellan, W.C. MO 11th Inf. Co.F
Lewellen, Francis M. MO 1st N.E. Cav.
Lewellen, J.W. MO Cav. Woodson's Co.
Lewellen, John W. MO 1st N.E. Cav.
Lewellen, T. MO Cav. Woodson's Co.

There is a Samuel Lewin listed as a member of 5th Missouri Cavalry, Co. D. Because of the frequent misspellings found in Civil War records, I thought I'd list this man, just in case.

Listed in the Oklahoma Confederate Pensions Index are:
Lewallen, Elizabeth P.
Lewelling, Victoria A.

These full widow's pension applications are available through the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Check in the list above to see if you recognize any brother's, father's or son's names, as this might give you some clues, since many times family members enlisted together in the same unit.

Good Luck in your search,

Jim Martin
