William Tippen, age 38, native of South Carolina, appears in the Stoddard County, (Richland Township) Missouri, 1860 Federal Census. He was elected Colonel, 2nd Inf Regt, 1st Division, Missouri State Guard, on July 10, 1861, probably at Bloomfield, and resigned his commission on September 2, 1861, most likely at Camp Hunter, Scott County, Missouri. A postwar letter written by Benjamin J. Farmer, an officer of the regiment, indicates that Tippen resigned because he did not feel competent to drill the regiment. If you should know anything about his prewar or postwar career I would like to hear from you.
