Samuel Holmes was colonel of the 10th Missouri Infantry (US) until he resigned near the end of the Vicksburg campaign. Actually, he commanded a brigade during much of that time. He appears later as colonel of the 40th Missouri. I don't recall him being from Franklin County, but I could be wrong about that. The 10th Missouri was primarily made up of Illinois and Iowa men, with only 1 company being Missourians.
