Re: John Quincy Callaway
In Response To: John Quincy Callaway ()

A little more background information would be helpful in precisely identifying this man. What part of Missouri was he from? The Compiled Service Records show a "John Callaway" as a Lieutenant in the Missouri State Guard, Missouri's pre-Confederate army. But they also show two other "John Callaway"s. My own records of the Guard's officer corps show three possibles: A Captain -- Callaway, of the IV Division (a geographic division organized north of the Missouri River from counties just west of the center of the state), a Lieutenant John Callaway, of the III Division (a geographic division organized north of the Missouri River from counties just east of the center of the state), and a Second Lieutenant John F. Callaway from the VIII Division (a geographic division organized south of the Missouri River from counties along the Kansas border). The first was probably from Carroll County; the second had his name spelled as "Calliway", but was noted to have been wounded at Pea Ridge; the third was spelled "Calloway" in some sources, resided in Bolivar, in Polk County, and is also listed as having been wounded at Pea Ridge.

The problem is that in the Spencerian script of the time, it is very difficult to distinguish between the letters F, Q, and S of the time. So, it is very difficult to trust modern typed archives since the initials may be utterly misinterpreted by whoever transcribed the record. It is also possible that the first and second man may be one in the same--records are lousy where they actually do still exist.

So, if you can provide a bit of clarification, I can give you a bit more detail on any of these men.
