Several years ago, I was exploring rural roads in Fannin County Texas looking for the location where my great great grandparents may have lived in a old log house. I came upon an old gentleman who came walking out of the "brush." He said he was looking for stray cows.

The conversation began about my purpose for being there and he said his widowed grandmother and his 6-year old mother lived near where my great great grandparents lived. In 1870, his grandmother and his mother were roused early one morning during the post-civil war "Lee-Peacock Feud" and were confronted by a group of men who were in Lewis Peacock's Union League during the war. They told the old woman and her daughter to get what belongings they could carry and get out because "We are going to burn your house down." Th old woman went back into the house and reappeared with a "Old Greener" muzzle-loading shotgun and told the men to get going or they will receive both barrels. The men rode off.

When the old man came out of the brush, I immediately thought a ghost of Confederate "Brush Soldiers" of Maj. James R. Diamond's Brush Battalion, which my great grandfather was a member.
