Re: Guerillas, Partisans, Irregulars, etc.

Jerry I accidentally posted my answer to Sue instead of you. Here it is again. Sorry Sue.

The Home Guard in the South was similar to a Confederate "gestapo". See the movie, "Cold Mountain"

True, though many Home Guard unite were composed of loyal and honest men, there were units who preyed on their community and even those who worked with the out-liers.

The events in Cold Mountain are based on fact, though many charcters and units are switched around. Yanks did what Confederates did and Regular troops did what irregular ones did in the movie and the other way around.

For example they have the character of Stob Rob being shot with two others by the Home Guard while playing Bonaparte's Retreat. Now this did happen to three men in that area. However Stob Rob Shelton was one of the 13 men executed by the 64th NC Infantry, a regular Army Unit. It was lead by Col. Lawrence Allen and Lt. Colonel James Keith. They had hunted Union Partisans into the Shelton Laurel Valley. The men having fled into the woods, the 64th used an interrogation technigue they had mastered on the women. They would hang the women with their toes barely scraping the ground until nearly dead, then cut them down and question them. Experts could tell how long to leave them in the air by a certain shade of blue they would turn this side of death. This way the sensation of dying could be repeated again and again. The result of this "questioning" would net 15 men, 5 of them probably partisans. 13 would be executed there and two escaped.

When Governor Vance found this out he wanted charges brought against Allen and Vance. To make a long story short (if this irregular page goes up, I'll tell the long story) Keith and Vance lose their command and my relation, one W.N. Garrett would command the 64th until they were surrendered at the Cumberland Gap to Burnsides. Bursides might not have made a great General but I bet he could play poker. James Turchin.
