Missouri State Guard

I am seeking information on a MSG unit known as "Frazier's Battalion". Where can I find a history of this unit???

I have seen a reference that the commander was Maj. W. H. L. Frazier. Does anyone know if this could possibly be the same man as: W. L. H. Frazier, age 46, b. TN listed on the 1860 Barry Co., Missouri census???

W. L. H. Frazier's son, William Harrison Frazier, of Barry County, served as the captain of Co. G, 8th Missouri Inf. CSA.

Frazier's Battalion later formed part of the Eighth Missouri Infantry and many of the men in companies G, I and K were from Barry County.

Some research of service records shows that Co. "A", Frazier's Battal. became Co. "G", 8th Inf. and Co. "C", Frazier's Battal. became Co., "I", 8th Inf. Other sources show they were part of "Parson's Division of Missouri Volunteers".

The service records also record this notation: "In compliance with S. O. No. 27, Headquarters Trans-Mississippi Department, dated Little Rock, January 28, 1863, the 7th (also known as Mitchell's) and Frazier's Battalions of Missouri infantry were consolidated to form a regiment which was first known as Mitchell's (also the 5th) Regiment Missouri Infantry, but was later officially designated the 8th Regiment Missouri Infantry."

A bio. of Newton C. Charles, who served as 2nd Lt. of Co. G, 8th Missouri Inf., reads in part as follows: "At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted with the Missouri State Guards, served six months, taking part in the battle of Drywood, Wilson Creek, Dug Spring and Lexington. After ward joining the Confederate army and enlisting in Company G, 8th Missouri Infantry, was elected lieutenant of his company and served in that regiment until the close of the war."

Missouri State Archives records show that there was a unit designated "Frazier's Company, 6th Regiment, Missouri State Guard". The records show this company existed about two months (Feb. - Apr., 1862). No data on the commander but, it does appear a few men were from Barry County.

The enlistment dates for the Barry County men in "Frazier's Battalion" range from August to October 1862. Was this a MSG unit or was it formed under the Conscript act of the Confederate States?
