If I may, and I may get booted here! It is obvious to me that both you and John are Northern sympathetic. It is equally obvious that I am Southern sympathetic. Because it is so readily obvious to the opposing sides, we both are biased, however, you do make a very valid point. There is not enough evidence to persecute either the Southern or the Northern men that were active here. We are left to only assume that the Yankees assumed that these men were "up to no good" and executed them. There type of events did in fact happen to both sides in the course of this war! It is made clear that these Yankees were aware that what they were doing was in fact Wrong and the reports written to justify those consequences!
The North and the South, as family units, were taught some very, very different values and continue today living according to those inherit values. Today those values are still in conflict! (and if you don't know what I'm talking about, that proves this point.)
