How Ex- Confederates were treated after the war

My Great Grandfather Joseph was a Confederate soldier in
Missouri, serving with the 8th Missouri Calvary. I read
that after the war, a lot of the ex-confederates lost some
of their rights, such as voting, not being able to hold
public office, etc. and some even were hunted down and
murdered. Was this common after the war? Does anyone know
what other actions were taken against them? Mike.
