Jesse James' grave was exhumed a few years back and the History Channel did a documentary on it. I believe that they required a proven descendant of a female relative. James Ross, a judge and great great grandson provided the required DNA. I am sure you could contact the folks at Family Tree DNA and they could give you some good pointers. You also might want to speak with local police departments and medical examiners. They have to make identifications using DNA.
