I am not at all certain that the rank used by Leeper to describe Tucker is necessarily reliable. Most of the guerrillas were referred to as "captain". There was a Joseph Tucker, listed as a lieutenant in Clardy's Battalion that surrendered at Wittsburg, Arkansas, in May, 1865. That battalion descended from a group of irregulars led by R. C. Berryman, among others. Perhaps he is a suspect as well.
It just seems to me that late 1863, early 1864, is a tad early for an officer of Elliott's Battalion to be recruiting that far north. Shelby's units arrived in northeast Arkansas to recruit in the late spring of 1864. Just a thought.
