Re: CSA CPT John Drury Pulliam Howard Co. Area 186

Bruce:

Here is the best fit I can find to point you in the right direction.

J. Drury Pulliam b: 24 NOV 1844 to Jno./John Cockrill Pulliam (b 1-21-1808, Davidson, TN, d: 11 FEB 1887 in Saline County, Missouri) and Catherine Judith Chambers (b: 6 FEB 1815 in Lawrenceburg, IN d: 1905 Married: 27 APR 1836 in Saline Co. MO.) is found in the 1850 Census in Saline Co. MO. He has an older brother Luther S. (b 1838 who ends up in Forbes Howard Co. VMM in March 1865 G.O.# 3 Militia) 1860 finds the family again in Saline Co Dwelling 1545 quite wealthy with $15,000 property and $8,000 land. Drury as he is stated in most of the records apparently enrolled in 1861 with the Saline Co Guards, at the battle of Carthage Wilson's Creek etc...
There is puportedly an entry in (Goodspeed's?) History of Saline County page 325 about the Pulliam family and Drury particularly. His 6th MO Regt Infanty card lists him as a native of Howard Co and resident of Texas Co. at the time of his transfer from the MSG to CSA May 15 1862. I've found nothing to indicate any Pulliam's in Texas county in the 1860 Census and do not find anything close in Howard County for 1850 or 1860 though he does have aunts and uncles in Howard county. His grandparents were Drury Pulliam(1771) and Nancy Ann Cockrill and his aunt was Eliza Pulliam. The following DAR entry fills in the extended lineage:

"The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 39 page 47 Miss Mary Shackelford Finney. DAR ID Number: 38134 Born in Lexington, Missouri. Descendant of Maj. John Cockrill. Daughter of Thomas Monroe Finney and Mary Shackelford, his wife. Granddaughter of Thomas Shackelford and Eliza Pulliam, his wife. Gr.-granddaughter of Drury Pulliam and Ann Robertson Cockrill, his wife. Gr.-gr.-granddaughter of John Cockrill and Ann (Robertson) Johnson, his wife. John Cockrill, (1757-1837), was with the Virginia troops 1776 in command of Col. Evan Shelby in all battles against the Indians. He was wounded several times and the legislature of North Carolina gave him a grant of land, the ground on which the Tennessee Centennial was held. He was born in Virginia; died in Nashville, Tenn. Also No. 25905"

"Kinfolks" by William Curry Harllee p. 2560-2 has entries on Jonathon and Catherine J Pulliam as well as their ancestors. It does not list all of their children as recorded in census reports and appears to only list those that survived to 1880 or so. Interestingly there is one unprovenced note that refers to Drury as having been killed in Oct 1861 (that of course is the wrong year as I believe it was 1864.-JJR) I've found no indication that Drury ever married or had children though certainly his siblings did.

Hope this points you in the right direction. As always its been fun!

John R.
