Re: one CSA soldier's adventure on smallpox island

Excellent posting. Thanks for sharing.
My ancestor, Lt. Fielding Price of the 1st Arkansas Cav. died of smallpox in the Yankee Prison in Little Rock on Feb. 1, 1865.
After Price was already dead, a Yankee soldier went to his widow and told her that he could buy Fielding Price out of prison if she paid a certain amount of money.
She sold everything she could to raise the money to get Fielding Price out on the chance that she could nurse him back to health, gave it to the Yankee and that left her family flat broke. There she was with a baby on the way and a houseful of kids with no husband, no money, no help, and no hope.
Smallpox was a terrible disease but the Yankees could be worse.
