To make a correction to my last post, many sources cite the name of the major as George Nichols, but I believe it was actually Charles H Nichols. He was relieved about the same time as Coffee for cause unknown and subsequently served with distinction as Lieutenant Colonel of Jackman's regiment. I found an explanation in Jackman's "Behind Enemy Lines".
