There is no information to prove this story. And I have heard it before. I am fairly confident alleging that it was fabricated to save face for some of the units involved. Funny, that nowadays the story makes them look even more like baffoons when a whole unit falls for this scam.

In reality, the Confederates were camped outside of normal rifle shot and small cannon shot of the fort. They camped far enough away that men marching in town would have been shadows. All that Ewing's men had to do is go into town and clear out a few straggling rebels and probably sneak up behind and kill a few sentries. With that accomplished, he and his men simply marched out of the fort.
