The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Quantrill - Petersen

I've heard of prisons and refugee camps but I've never heard of concentration camps during the Civil War. As I understand it, many Confederate supporters were exiled but were usually free to go out of the exile area where they could not support the guerrillas. Those who were imprisoned could take the loyalty oath or post bond and were freed from prison. Imprisoned women were usually released on the condition that they go into exile.

Many Union supporters choose to move to a safer area. My GGGGrandmother's sister, Letty Rowland of Cass Co., MO moved with her husband and family to Kansas.

Do you have family stories about the destruction of your ancestor's homes and properties? I'd be interested in reading what you write.
