1st MO Cavalry (Gates) Question

While the 1st Missouri Cavalry (Gates) was still mounted, were they a true cavalry (i.e., swords, pistols, carbines fighting mounted) unit or did they function more as mounted infantry (carried longarms and fought dismounted)?

For some reason, in my reading I've gotten the impression that the 1st Missouri Cavalry fought more like mounted infantry. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks,

Jim
