Hi Bruce, Thank you for all your information. This affidavit I mentioned said that the occurence was concerning some prisoners, and was "not proper to mention in an affidavit". I do have Joseph E.C. Defries Union Army information. My problem is I am trying to find out what made him change his name to Charles Crittenden Coleman. I thought something that happened in this skirmish or during his brief time in the war, made him change his name. He obtained several statements from men he served with, that Coleman and Defries were one and the same.I guess I will have to assume that Defries was his real name and he changed it when he came west in 1868. The question I asked was just a shot in the dark as most genealogy queries are. But thank you for all your information. Ellen Forrest. P.S. This web page is great. I have learned lots of history.
