Lloyd,
To me, Captain William Coats commanded Company A of Confederate Colonel William O. Coleman's regiment mostly in Coat's home area of south-central Missouri. Coleman's regiment mostly operated far behind Union lines as irregulars, and they had it rough.
I am writing now about guerrilla warfare in MO during 1864, and I would like to hear what you have. If you can supplement what few resources I have on Bill Coats I would be delighted to cite you as a source and whatever other sources you have. Otherwise, all I can write about Captain Coats is just a mention or two.
Please contact me privately at Mapmaker3@aol.com and I will gladly share what I have. You are certainly entitled to that.
