One of the Staley's as described above may be

Name: S M Staley
Age in 1860: 39
Birth Year: abt 1821
Birthplace: Virginia
Home in 1860: Mingo, Bates, Missouri
Post Office: Cove Creek
Household Members: Name Age
S M Staley 39
Elizabeth Staley 22
Missouri Staley 1

Right location given what we know about B.F. Simpson being from Bates County as well.

From the evidence of land holdings and background it appears to me that Col. Anthony and the 7th Kansas were terrorizing, murdering, and stealing from the affluent, with no regard to abolition or slavery philosophy. Grosshart's were rich and likely had Union feelings coming from Pennylvania via Illinois. Fulkerson had money according th the 1860 census with family coming from New Jersey via northern Kentucky. Benjamin Simpson was of above average wealth for Bates Co but apparently also raised and traded horses, a commoditiy a Cavalry Unit would desire. Just supposition but it strikes me that the common thread is wealth not prior service or family members in the MSG etc... As best as I can tell none were slave owners per the 1860 schedules.
