Mortally wounded means he received wounds that could have been fatal.

I have a record of one man in the 43rd Tennessee as having been mortally wounded at Vicksburg, June 1863. He died in 1900 due to effects of his CW wounds.

I copy below a short snippet of what will be found in his CSR file.

John D. Mullins

Residence was not listed;
Enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant (date unknown).
He was listed as:
* Wounded Independence, MO (date not stated)
Promotions:
* 1st Lieut
"F" Co. MO 1st SM Cavalry USA

The regimental roster notes that he died from his wounds
