Confederate captured on Blackwater River

The Bates County Museum in Butler, MO is in possession of the Civil War Journal of Abram H. Lewis. The date of the journal begins on Dec. 15, 1861 when he leaves his Saline Co. home to join 650 men enroute to Price in Osceola. Within 3-4 days they are captured by Federals on the Blackwater River, marched to Jeff City, placed on a train, taken to McDowell College, and then on to Alton. After 3 months imprisonment, he finally submits, takes the Oath of Allegience, and is released in March 1862.

Mr. Lewis was quite articulate in every regard with the exception of giving particular information about the actual encounter and surrender. He states there were about 650 men, only about 350 of whom were armed, and that their surrender came quickly upon a first encounter with the Federals. He speaks about the confusion of the day, but does not name officers, units, etc.

Any information about recruiting efforts in the area, officers in charge, the Blackwater engagement, and prisoners of McDowell & Alton would be greatly appreciated. I'm transcribing the journal and want to prepare a special exhibit for Mr. Lewis and would like to have more background information about his experience. Thank you.
