thanks for your posting!
When I first discovered these documents there in Ironton, the local historian there in town told me that the local JP (I think his name was D.W. Shaver) did this for SEVERAL people in/near Iron County who were indeed southern soldiers and sympathizers.
I therefore wondered if Wm. Carroll was perhaps a soldier, partisan/guerrilla, or in some way supporting the southern war effort. The fact that two of his brothers were in CSA units (along with a possible third brother serving) really made me look for some confirmatory documentation, but so far with no "bombproof" confirmation....
Mebbe one of these days a doc or two will turn up somewhere...???
