- STLGSQ: Vol. IX, No. 4 (Dec. 1976) by Mabel Faatz - "Arsenal Island Cemetery was located in the middle of the Mississippi River near the foot of Arsenal St. It was first operated by the city; later the military used it during the Civil War for burial of Confederates and the graves were marked by wooden crosses. During flooding many of the crosses were washed away. Later, when those buried here were moved to the National Cemetery, they accounted for the large number of "unknowns" there. No record has been found for re-burials by the city." see Jefferson Barracks
