I'm trying to find information on my paternal grandfather, James M. SCOTT. USCWS&SS gives the following references:

3 Scott, James M. Union Infantry 23rd Regiment, Missouri Infantry
4 Scott, James M. Union Cavalry 4th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry
5 Scott, James M. Union Cavalry 1st Regiment, US Reserve Corps, Missouri Home Guard

All I know of him is that he was a tinsmith in Marceline (Linn County) and died on Sunday, July 2 (no year listed in the clipping).

Can anyone give me direction on how to begin?
