Thanks, Don. I have been on the road, and I missed Gay and Drew's messages. Looks like this incident is pretty well documented. This was the day of the First Battle of Boonville. Given how much outrage was caused by other events, I am still surprised that this one is not mentioned more often. I could not find anything about it searching biographies of McNeil, or sites dealing with the Civil War in St Louis.
