Jim you may already know this but Carson's father Samuel H Randol was in hot water with McNeil several times during the war and has a substantial file in the provost marshall files. He broke his parole and was detained in St. Louis I believe in November 1863. Son Harvey and Rodolphus were in trouble too. So Carson's charge of being a spy may be less associated with 8th Missouri movements and more with family being in trouble in Cape County.
