Now that we know who he is and what happened to him, I should point out that the inscription date matches the date he took over as commander of the regiment while at Grant's Hedqtr's. Question is of course, is the inscription to him from Grant or is it Burke' writing. The book itself strikes me as being a presentation to a new Colonel in command of a regiment of distinction. Please take care of it! It was in the hallowed hands of a true fighting man who died in the service of his country. Something not to be taken lightly particularly on Memorial Day. Thanks for posting you question.
