Re: Doctor at Moore's Mill Battle 28 Jul 62

Vanwijnsberghe,

I hope I pronounced that correctly.

I consulted with Hugh P. Williamson's July 1972 article in "Missouri Historical Review" regarding medical help after the battle. I have no idea if Dr. Hunt was present during the battle, but if he lived nearby, the chances are very good that he helped treat the wounded. Williamson cited Colonel Odon Guitar, the Union commmander at the fight, who wrote:

"The loss of the enemy...was 52 killed and from 125 to 150 wounded. His wounded were scattered for miles around the battlefield. Many of them were carried on horses back to Boone, Randolph, and other counties. On our march next day we found from from one to a dozen at almost every house we passed..."

Guitar's own losses were 13 killed and 55 wounded. Several suffered heat stroke and heat exhausion, particularly on the southern side, since they could not get to the water source. The Union side held Brown's Spring during the fight.

The local "Fulton Telegraph version of the fight published July 29 stated:

"From the best information we could get from the yeomanry of the neighborhood, who came into our lines in the evening after the battle, to get permission to scour the battle-ground and vicinity for dead and wounded rebels, there was from seventy-five to one hundred of them killed and wounded."

I realize this is not definitive, but it is the best I can do for you.
