Hi, Jim,

Tom Campbell according to census records was born about 1847. That would make him about 14 years old in 1861. The photo in the strange garb appears to be a young adult male. I am not good at guessing ages, but an age range might be 15-25. I also have a photo of Grandpa Tom as an older, gray haired rancher. I can email you a copy of the photos, or snail mail them if you give me an address.

Your good questions made me realize that he must have been a very young man when he fought for his country. From what I know about the family, the earlier generations of Campbells had lightening tempers and strong beliefs and values. Later generations practically built the forming state of Nevada and were strong leaders. All generations have been no strangers to the six gun, and several ended up in law enforcement. They all have fiercely defended their own.

I would appreciate any insight.
