Re: Columbia, MO prisoners
In Response To: Columbia, MO prisoners ()

Rita,

I only found information about Jesse Hooten in Joanne Eakin's 1995 "MO POWs" prison ledger entry that say Private Jesse Hooten of Poindexter's command was captured Columbia, MO 12 October 1862, sent to Alton, IL Military Prison where he died 19 Dec 1862 of rubeola. Confederate Colonel John A. Poindexter of Randolph County recruited quietly in and around Randolph County during the summer of 1862, but as his unit grew the Federal found out and sent a large cavalry command which hunted him down and defeated his recruiting command in August 1862. Union troops were rounding up his men over the next several weeks.

There was nothing in this source about the Harmons, but they could have been part of Colonel Poindexter's or Colonel Joseph C. Porter's larger command recruited over a larger part of NE MO during the same time. As I recall my reading Confederate Colonel Caleb Dorsey was also recruiting east of Boone County during this time, but not near as many of his recruits were captured.

Just curious, but where did you receive the information about these men that you cited?
