In Response To: Col. P. E. Burk ()

Kris, As you have found out, Col. Burke was the Commanding Officer of the 66th Illinois Veteran Volunteer Infantry, 2nd Brigade, 16th Corps, Army of the Tennessee. Killed in Action, Rome X-Roads 1864. I'm a direct descendant of Marcus A. Hatfield, Sgt/Lt. Co. G 66th Illinois. I have a volume of the "1863 U.S. Infantry Tactics" that was issued to Marcus by the War Dep't. when he was Commissioned in the field. These tactics and customs of service books are fairly common. Most of them were either given or issued to Officers commisioned in the field, so that they could learn what some of their responisibilties as officers were and what was required of them as officers. As for Marcus, he mustered out with the Unit at Camp Logan in 1865, returned home to Pitchin Ohio and became a Shop Keeper. Died in 1927 and is buried in the Garlough/Hatfield Cemetary in Pitchin.

BTw, the Seceretary of State maintains a web-site containg muster rolls of all Illinois Regiments in the Civil War. Also, it maintains a web site of all the Battle Flags (pictures) carried by the Regiments of the State. The 66th's is pretty well shot up. Something to see though, gives something of the feeling of what these men endured.
