Jayhawking Raids of 1861/62
In Response To: Re: Two Border War Questions ()

Thanks very much for your insights and suggestions. I obtained the Herklotz articles. I have started to compile a simple chronology of the major "arson" events in the innital round of jayhawking raids in 1861-62. Here is what I have so for. If anyone would have corrections/clarifications/additions, it would be very much appreciated:

• September 17, 1861: Morristown burned – Jennison?
• September 22, 1861: Osceola (St. Clair County) completely burned (Osceloa was about the same size as Lawrence, which was partially burned in Quantrill’s raid) - Lane
• Fall, 1861: Harrisonville burned - Jennison
• November, 1861: Homes burned in a wide swath around Pleasant Hill (Cass County)
• December 12, 1861: Papinsville and Butler burned (Bates County) – Williams/3rd Kansas
• January 1, 1862: Dayton (Cass County) burned (46 of 47 buildings) – Anthony/7th Kansas
• January 8, 1862: Columbus (Johnson County) burned - Anthony/7th Kansas burned what hadn't been curned in prior raids
• January 14, 1862: 45 homes burned around in Rose Hill (Johnson County); many more plundered - Lane
• January, 1862: Over 30 houses burned during Jennison’s advance from Independence to West Point (Jackson, Cass and Bates Counties)
• January, 1862: 160 homes burned in the countryside around Kingsville (Johnson County)
• January, 1862: several hundred homes burned in the vicinity of Lexington (Lafayette County)
