Receive Pensions (1913)

"FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Thursday,
October 2, 1913

ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY CONFEDERATES GET PENSIONS

Thirteen ex-Confederate soldiers of this county have been granted pensions
under an act of the Missouri Legislature passed last winter, appropriating
$30,000 to be distributed as pensions among indigent veterans of the "Lost
Cause." They are: W. S. Miller, Napoleon B. Raines, Isaac R. Campbell and
Holcomb Patterson of Farmington and vicinity; Benjamin League and J. H.
Welch of Bonne Terre; W. H. Mitchell and David Callahan of Flat River; John
Hunter Sr., and Charles Huff of Bismarck; Wm. Alexander of Elvins; S. S.
Taylor of Frankclay and Enos Dalton of Desloge.

There were 1,412 applicants for pensions under this act, of which 653 were
granted. They are to draw $10 a month each, beginning yesterday, October
1st, for a period of two years, when the pension will cease unless the
Legislature makes another appropriation for the purpose. The 653 will
exhaust the appropriation of $30,000 in less than six months, so that each
of the pensioners who were passed will receive only about $60.

George O'Rear, 95 years old, Joplin, Mo., and John Westbrook, 95, Gower,
Mo., are the deans of the pensioners. Only two others among the 653 have
passed the 90 mark. They are B. F. Sargent, Jane, Mo., 94 years old, and
Jasper M. Triplett, 93, Bloomfield, Mo.

The "young lads" are: N. B. Woody, Gladstone; William Pearson, Boonville;
J. P. Stovall, Pineville; and William Wagoner, Bodgett, Mo., each of whom is
65 years old.

Fifty-one of the men are over 80 and under 85 years old, while seventeen are
85 or over. There are 444 between the ages of 70 and 80 years."
