The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: I need the name of an author and a title.

October 30th. 1864 Sunday. Another Sabbath without rest. Started at the usual hour and marched 18 miles to Marysville, Ark. We passed out of Missouri about 7 or 8 miles from our starting point. Farewell Missouri for the present. The heart of thy people is right but the tyrant's heel is heavy on thy neck. The day of deliverance I hope will come. Got into camp in good time just on the border of the Indian Nation where Ark., Mo., and the Indian Nation come together. County all desolated. No news of the Yankees today or yesterday. No forage for our horses tonight. [p. 239]

November 22, 1864 Tuesday. Having passed through the Cherokee, Choctaw, and Chickasaw Nation today after a march of 17 miles, about 1 P. M. we emerged from the wilderness, crossed Red River, came into Fannin Co., Texas, and encamped on the south bank of the river. [When] crossing [we] forded at Kemps Ferry on the road to Bonham. Day very cold and the march, therefore, an unpleasant one. [p. 247]

Book is a great read.
