The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Jim;

I'm far from the unit expert on the board but in general early on in 1861 various county militias formed up under the southern cause usually named after the local politician or organizer. These were "unofficial". Many of these units were subsequently rolled into the Missouri State Guard, the "official" state militia of Gov. Claiborne Jackson before his ouster and government in exile after Lyon/Fremont/Blair managed to persuade folks in Washington DC that Federal martial law was required to keep Missouri in the Union. Many of the MSG units were rolled into regular CSA units after Pea Ridge/Elkhorn Tavern. I highly reccomend Jim McGhee's new book on Confederate units of Missouri for the details as it has very quickly become the defacto standard reference. You can order it off this boards home page.
